Cards for Health Care Workers in Alberta

We learned of an incredible initiative by a Calgary ICU and ER Respiratory therapist, Nancy Van Der Velden to bring cards to health care workers across Alberta. Nancy is welcoming cards and well wishes from any citizen that would like to offer their well wishes and support to the incredible teams across Alberta. 

The Virgin Radio Calgary has teamed up with Nancy to collect cards for distribution and Lubdub is thrilled to offer a drop-off location at our warehouse in Calgary, AB. Cards can be dropped off or mailed to the addresses found at the bottom of this page.

My name is Nancy and I’m a respiratory therapist at the PLC. I have worked in the ICU, ER and as a part of the code team for 14 years. Since March 2020, I’ve worked closely with the sickest of the sick Covid patients, helping secure breathing tubes, managing ventilators and working collaboratively with the other healthcare team members to provide care in the ICU and ER. 

With this 4th wave and our hospitals and ICU already at capacity, us healthcare workers are feeling drained.  The protests at the hospitals are only adding to us feeling disheartened with this new surge of Covid patients. Regardless of politics and disagreements, healthcare workers are still here fighting to help save lives. We’re dedicated professionals who will continue to show up to do everything we can to help people through their illness.

I’m trying so hard to shift my energy to navigate this pandemic differently. I find happiness in trying to lift people up so I came up with an idea of messaging my kids’ principals to see if they’d get the students to make thank you cards for health care workers that I can disperse.

After further thought, I wanted to see if I could be more reaching with my goal so that I can get cards to other hospitals in Calgary (if possible, throughout Alberta). I know that there are so many people out there that support us, it’s just that at the moment the ones who don’t are the loudest. I would love for our supporters to be louder to help lift the spirits of Alberta’s amazing healthcare workers who aren’t feeling much support right now.
