HCW Feature: Rhonda – A Bright Light in the NICU at HSC Women’s Hospital

Today, we’re thrilled to feature Rhonda, a NICU nurse at HSC Women’s Hospital in Winnipeg, who was nominated by her colleague, Kyla, for the profound impact she makes every day.

A Colleague’s Tribute

Kyla, a Social Worker who recently joined the NICU team, shared these touching words about Rhonda:

“I have been a Social Worker in the NICU for four months, and Rhonda has stood out to me from day one. She is such a bright ray of sunshine—she carries herself with kindness and compassion everywhere she goes.

She has been a fierce advocate for babies and their families and does not shy away from advocating for herself and fellow colleagues. We have joked that she could easily do the job of a Social Worker! She treats everyone with dignity and respect.

It really is an honour to work alongside her, and I believe we could all learn a few things just by watching Rhonda. She is joy, excitement, patience, and calm all wrapped up in one beautiful human. The NICU and families alike are exceptionally lucky to have her.”

A Nurse, an Advocate, and a Friend

In the NICU, where tiny patients and worried families rely on both expert medical care and deep emotional support, Rhonda shines. Her colleagues clearly see her as a pillar of strength, compassion, and advocacy—not only for her patients but also for the entire team.

When you work in such a high-stress environment, having someone like Rhonda who radiates calm and positivity makes all the difference. If the HSC NICU team does primary nursing -  there might be a waiting list for families who want Rhonda as their Primary Nurse!

A Grateful Community

To Rhonda: thank you for the light and love you bring to your patients, their families, and your coworkers. And to Kyla: thank you for taking the time to recognize and celebrate your remarkable colleague.

Healthcare heroes like Rhonda remind us that the true magic in healthcare often lies beyond clinical skill—it’s in the way people treat one another, lift each other up, and create an environment where both patients and staff can feel safe and cared for.
